A Discussion of Kitchen Cabinets

If you’re shopping for kitchen cabinets, you’ll eventually get into the debate over customization. People may toss out terms like “stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets, custom cabinets.” What does all that mean, anyway?

Stock Cabinets

Stock cabinets are the least expensive way to go and they have come a long way in the past decade. Check around at a home improvement store and yo may find 6 to 8 door styles, finishes and wood species, along with three or four molding choices. Enough to get you started in an economical remodeling project. And, you typically can take them home that day–no waiting for weeks for someone to build your cabinets.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets are the next step up financially, as they have more frills, such as the vertical rope molding that can dress up the area around your doors or the cabinet bun feet. You also get into the chocolate mocha glazes and the fancy stains.

If you’ve done a few kitchen remodeling projects, you tend to get pickier as you go. If you want sturdier drawer glides, stronger cabinet boxes, more crown molding choices, different stains and glazes, you tend to lean toward those semi-custom cabinets. If you don’t plan to stay in the house long, think long and hard about putting too much money into your kitchen cabinets.

Custom Cabinets

On the upper end of the spectrum are custom cabinets that are made to your kitchen’s exact dimensions. No shims or tapered cut wood inserts allowed, here. Custom cabinets are a one of a kind deal. These can be great if you’ve got specific design tastes–or an old house that needs a lot of customization.

Whichever route you choose, shop around, compare prices and always check references. You want to make sure you’re getting a good quality kitchen cabinet, regardless your budget.

Cabinet Refacing Adds Style and More

If a new kitchen is out of your budget, look for other ways to reach your goals.

If the goal is to have a kitchen that looks “new” and has modern cabinets, hardware, countertops and fixtures, there are other ways to get there. While a full scale kitchen remodeling can take 6 to 8 weeks and perhaps $35,000 in costs, cabinet refacing can deliver a similar result without all the time and expense.

Cabinet Refacing Costs
Depending on the contractor, the size of your kitchen and your cabinet selections, cabinet refacing often costs from $3,000 to $6,000. You’ll then need to add in a few hundred or thousand for the extras – sink, countertop, faucet, etc.

In many markets, that type of investment in the kitchen will pay dividends. Even in a slow market, the kitchen is the place to put your home improvement dollars.

With cabinet refacing, a contractor will come in and measure the kitchen. You’ll talk about which door styles and wood you like and then pick a sample that fits your tastes. The contractor then will return to install new door and drawer fronts. The whole process can be completed in a few weeks, depending on the contractor’s lead time.

In some kitchens, the cabinet refacing will do the trick, but in others you’ll need to take a few other steps. Many cabinet refacing contractors also install countertops, sinks, faucets and cabinet hardware so you can get a whole package. Just make sure your selections blend with any trim, tile, or existing fixtures in the kitchen or adjacent family room. And, check the contractor’s references carefully to ensure you are getting the best company for your needs.

When having kitchen cabinets installed know that Home Depot and Lowe’s do have quality cabinets. Although there are higher quality products available, they may not be worth the money unless you have a high end property ($500,000 or more). If you do, they are almost a must. If you having a lesser-expensive property and are concerned about controlling cost, than your local home improvement store may not be a bad option.

It is easy to find a decent cabinet to fit your kitchen. The kitchen designers at Home Depot and Lowe’s are (fairly) knowledgeable and can help you.
