Remodeling 101: Set Priorities and Get Started
Remodeling projects. We all have lots of them in our minds or on the drawing boards. The tricky part is deciding what to do when. If you’re trying to figure out a schedule, start by setting some priorities for your remodeling projects.
Remodeling for Safety
Safety should be your first concern and that typically means:
- Electrical wiring: If you’re buying a house that may have unsafe wiring, get a thorough assessment from a licensed electrician. It’s always best to do wiring early, as it’s disruptive and often involves making holes in walls. Fix the wiring and the holes. Then, move on to painting and other home decorating projects!
- Structural issues, such as rotting floors: We once had an exterior staircase that was rotting underneath. Luckily, the contractor found it before we all fell through! If you’re buying a home, a good home inspector or contractor can point out similar issues.
Remodeling for Function
Now comes the functional remodeling. Your next remodeling project may be a new mudroom for the kids. Or, think about the traffic flow through the house, the water pressure in the bathroom, and the storage in your kitchen. What drives you crazy the most?
As you plan, remember to figure out a budget. It’s easy to focus on the grand transformation, but someone will have to pay for it. Don’t schedule contractors without setting your budget, first.
Next, comes the fun part–the home decorating. If you’ve always wanted faux painting in the dining room, try these tips from Sherwin Williams. After you’ve suffered through the electrical work and the broken plumbing, dive into the painting, the kitchen remodeling or the new floor in the foyer. You’ve earned it!
