Spice Up Your Kitchen Remodeling
How does your kitchen work? Not the appliances, per se, but the flow of the space, the placement of the cabinets, the work space?
Even if you don’t cook–or you cook sporadically–you still want a kitchen that functions. When looking for ways to update a kitchen or do a complete kitchen remodeling, think about the functional aspects–can you find what you need, is it easy to keep clean, does the kitchen cabinet layout make sense?
Revisit Kitchen Remodeling Ideas
It’s a good idea to revisit this topic every six months or so in an older kitchen because there are always ways to update the space. Short of a major kitchen remodel, what can you do to make it just easier to use? Here are some options for improving functionality and giving those kitchen cabinets more pizzazz.
- Improve the Kitchen Cabinets. One remodeling project that tops the list is painting the kitchen cabinets. You can take old oak cabinets from the 1980’s and transform them with a few (well, several) cans of paint. You should weigh whether the cabinets are nice enough to warrant the work. Then there’s the work–it’s typically not quick, but it is inexpensive compared with a kitchen remodel. One big question to ask yourself is whether to hire a painting contractor or do it yourself.
- Improve the Storage. Another option is to improve the storage. If you’re tired of digging through cabinets to find things, look for some interior dividers to help maximize the vertical space. Put plates, spices and bowls in their place so you see organization instead of clutter. There also are many styles of sliding drawers for kitchen cabinets.
- Improve Kitchen Cabinet Style. Lastly, look at your kitchen cabinet style. New kitchen cabinet hardware can make a big difference in the look and functionality of your space. This is one home improvement project you can do yourself–save the contractor for the full kitchen remodeling.
Take the time to evaluate the function and form of your kitchen and then decide on a plan of action to spruce up the kitchen. Starting with a little paint or new hardware, you can update your kitchen cabinets to give your kitchen a new look–without breaking your budget.
I personally go through my pantry every 5 or 6 months just because it’s amazing how much expired food you can accumulate if you don’t. Organization feels good when it comes to your food – it’s not my top priority to remember where I put my food…it should all be in the kitchen somewhere. Nothing worse than cleaning out your pantry and find something you were looking for a few months back. Could have saved that unnecessary trip to the store!
I also have a tendency to just revamp where my appliances are on the counters just to get the feeling of change, even if it is minor. Also gives you a chance to clean the tile or granite that has bread crumbs where the toaster has been sitting for months on end.
