Top 4 Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid
It’s easy to make mistakes when remodeling. Everyone does, so why not learn from others? (Or, just get a few laughs thinking of the adventures people have during home improvement). Here’s a list of some common mistakes people make when remodeling.
- Hiring the “wrong” contractor. This has to top the list, as the contractor is the key to the project. Pick the wrong one for the job and you’re bound to have some troubles. The term wrong can mean many things, from unscrupulous to just not so skilled in that area. Check out these questions to ask!
- Starting a home improvement project without being prepared. Come on, we’ve all been eager to jump into the game too quickly. Before you start, plan out the space, decide on the materials, narrow down the cost, etc. It’s a lot of work, but it beats the alternative of rushing to catch up the whole time.
- Paying too much money. This means paying a contractor too much because he is billing you for more than what you agreed to or that you’re not shopping around for deals on appliances, cabinetry, etc.
- Not getting a written contract. If it’s not in writing, it’s not enforceable should you need to pursue legal action. Hopefully you won’t, but a contract protects everyone and should be clear about what the contractor will do and not do, your role, who buys materials, etc.
Remodeling is an investment of your time and money–be smart with both. You have to be prepared, however, and try to avoid these common mistakes.
