Kitchen Remodeling: It Begins with a Design
Kitchen Design
If you’re remodeling your kitchen, one important consideration is the overall kitchen design. The overall design should drive your cabinetry selection, along with all the other key kitchen products. Are you looking for a traditional kitchen design with lots of detailing in the cabinets or a more contemporary kitchen design with little fuss?
Many people are moving away from the highly traditional kitchen cabinets and buying more transitional designs. Those newer designs tend to blend well with a wide variety of furniture and home interiors. If you’re trying to coordinate with nearby rooms, you maywant to do some research about which styles will fit.
A transitional design might have a two inch strip of decorating molding on the cabinets, but not the four to five inches found on some strictly traditional kitchen cabinet designs. Your contractor should be able to work with either style—just make sure he or she knows the direction you want to take.
The overall kitchen design can set the tone for the house. When remodeling or sprucing up your home, talk with your contractor about your tastes and how that may influence the end result.
Take Time to Design Your Kitchen
Some kitchen cabinet companies have good kitchen design planning tools that can get you started. Just flip through their cabinet styles and wood species and pull together your preferences. You may want to stick with the overall kitchen design you have now or move toward something more inspiring. Another approach is to talk with a few kitchen contractors to see what they are observing in the market. Is maple still a big cabinet seller? Would cherry be a better fit for your home?
A good contractor who works with kitchen design all the time should be able to guide you. The ultimate decision, however, comes down to your tastes and budget.
