Need Space? Try Basement Remodeling
Trying to expand your space without breaking the bank? Look no further than your basement.
Basements often get a bad reputation as the dingy part of the house, but you can change that without the cost of a major room addition. The first thing to look at is your ceiling height and whether the space takes in water.
Basement Remodeling Tips
Assuming you’ve got enough head room and take care of any water issues (sump pump, changing the drainage, drain tiles, etc.), it’s time to carve out some extra space. Talk with a few contractors about how to carve out a large, open rec room for the kids or a few smaller spaces for woodworking, crafts or a cozy reading nook.
A few replacement windows near the ceiling can help bring in light. This, coupled with track or canned lighting, can make a huge difference in how the space feels and functions.
When you meet with contractors, ask for creative ideas for working around the furnace and water heater and adding in storage for toys, books and games. Basements often have odd shaped spaces that can become unique storage options.
The contractor also should walk you through general costs. Are you looking for a quick remodeling, where you spruce up one area or a bigger remodeling that might involve moving plumbing and duct work to gain some overhead space?
One word of caution – basement remodeling doesn’t typically provide a high return on investment, so it’s wise to get creative…and also think about how long you plan to live there. If you may move within three years, think about remodeling a nice area for the kids instead of doing the whole room. Otherwise, plan your budget and ask the contractor for ideas on maximizing a bigger investment.
There are plenty of options, even in the smallest basement. It just takes a little creativity – and long term planning.
