Remodeling: Handling the Little Things
When remodeling, sometimes it’s the little things. The doorknobs that fall off, the scratches in your kitchen floor, the windows that leak.
How can you get a handle on all those nagging little remodeling projects without going crazy? The first step is to make a list of them and then group them into categories based on how long they would take to fix or how expensive it might be. You can also divide the lists by those that a contractor would do versus projects you’ll do yourself.
Define Your Remodeling Projects
If often makes sense to organize the projects by the type of task. If it’s fixing dripping faucets, put all the plumbing related projects on one list. If you’re going to hire a plumbing contractor, it’s better to do as much as you can in one swoop versus paying for several service calls.
If the projects are very specialized, think about what type of contractor could do them. If you need to shore up the trim around windows, look for a contractor who focuses on carpentry. If you’re replacing all your doorknobs, find a good salvage yard or retailer that specializes in character pieces.
Sometimes those small projects grow…such as the leaking windows that lead you to replacement windows. Think about how much leaking you can stand and for how long. Then compare it with the cost of replacement windows. In the long run, the replacement windows may be the best answer – unless you have nice older windows and can fix them for a tighter seal.
It always helps to have a few contractor in mind who don’t mind doing a lot of little projects. Sometimes that the quickest way to get those nagging projects off your list in one fell swoop!
