Roofing: Remodeling For Winter
If you’re living in an area where winter happens—and has been happening rather dramatically this year – you appreciate the importance of a good roof.
During the cold climate, it’s important to look for any signs of leaks, damage, or ice damming so that you can act quickly. Otherwise you may end up with a major remodeling project in the spring. (This advice is also relevant for those in warmer climates, but you’ll have an easier time examining your roof!)As weather permits, look around the outside of your home at all the places where the roofing touches the house.
If you sense bigger problems or can’t see or safely reach your roof, ask a roofing contractor to do an examination. Look for a roofing contractor who does a lot of work in your area and is licensed and bonded. Don’t let them on your roof during icy conditions, however, unless it’s an emergency repair.
The roofing contractor should tell you about any loose shingles, unattached flashing (the metal that joins the roofing to the house), unattached gutters, etc. You’ll then have to assess how big the problem is and whether you fix it during the winter or after.
If you’re planning a remodeling project in the spring that involves the roofing, then it’s logical to wait on minor fixes. If the roofing contractor sees bigger problems, ask if there is a quick fix until the bigger remodeling project is done. He may need to secure the roof differently from inside or add a temporary tarp, for example.
Your roof is obviously an important part of the home. Don’t overlook its condition because it’s so cold you don’t want to venture outside. Hire a roofing contractor to do an inspection if needed to make sure there are no major surprises.
