Do You Need an Architect?
Do you need an architect? That’s an important question for anyone who is undertaking a significant remodeling project. What do architects do and is it worth the added expense?
An architect is trained to evaluate the architectural style and layout of a house and draw plans for additions and other general home improvement projects. One big reason you’d hire an architect is to help blend the new space with the old.
You’ll all probably seen those room additions that so obviously were…well, added on. There was no thought given to blending the spaces together visually or using the same materials to tie it all together. Chances are there was no architect involved during the home improvement planning process.
Remodeling Tips
A good architect can solve that issue and give ideas on how to make the new structure seem as part of the original house. This is often done with a roof line, windows, and exterior detailing (shutters, coining on brick, etc.) that matches the original house.
Not all home improvement projects require an architect, however. If you’re remodeling a bathroom without doing any major addition or reconfiguration of your interior space, then the contractor typically can help plan the design. If you are doing a kitchen remodeling that just involves changing the cabinetry, countertop and floor without any reconfiguring, then an architect might not be needed.
Architectural fees can vary, but typically start around $1,500 for basic sketches and consultations to as much as 10 percent of the remodeling project costs for oversight during a major project. As you plan your project think through the details. Will you make many structural changes? Are you redoing your floor plan? If so, an architect can provide good insight.
