Confused by Replacement Windows?
Replacement windows. They are a tricky home improvement project. That’s because there are so many of them in your house. If you count, you might come up with 20, 30 …even 50 windows. The thoughts of buying 20 replacement windows seems daunting, but you have to look long-term.
The reality is that windows play an important part in the style of your house – and also the comfort you feel while inside. Ask anyone with leaking windows and you’ll hear it – “I want new windows!” Definitely an important home improvement project for them!
Replacement Window Performance
If you’re debating whether to buy replacement windows, look at their performance. What kind of shape are they in? Are they solid wood with nice trim? In that case, it might be worth adding a few shims to block air leakage. Then, restain or paint them and calling it a day.
If the entire window is falling apart, then replacement windows are the best option. You’ll be amazed at the selection –and how the energy efficiency has improved. Then there’s that feature that lets you tilt the window in for cleaning. Anyone who has tried to stuff their hands between the upper and lower windows on double hungs to clean the nooks and crannies will appreciate that tilting feature!
Replacement windows are not a quick purchase, that’s for sure. There’s too much to learn and ask questions about. You’ll need to think about how long you plan to stay in the house and what your long term goals are. Even if you are planning to move in a few years, replacement windows can pay off.
I can tell you from experience, however, that it’s hard to sell a house with old, leaky windows. Better to buy replacement windows now and at least enjoy them for a few years until you sell!
